2018 was the year that the remit of compliance officers grew even wider. Not only were risk and compliance officers expected to oversee the implementation and embedding of big set-piece regulatory changes such as the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive II and associated Regulation (MiFID II/R), but they also had to deal with cyber resilience, geopolitical risk, emerging new product areas such as cryptocurrencies and the potential for enhanced personal liability.
