Financial Crime Conversation – The Laundromats Exposed

Documents uncovered by investigative journalists place the UK at the centre of a secret Azerbaijani money laundering and lobbying scheme, revealing thousands of covert payments being made to European politicians and journalists between 2012 and 2014.

This is part of immense financial fraud schemes – the Global Laundromats – operated by organized criminals and corrupt officials which enabled billions of dollars to be laundered through a complex cleanse-and-spin cycle made up of shell companies, banks, fake loans and proxy agents in the UK, Russia, Moldova, Azerbaijan and Latvia.

The Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) broke the first Global Laundromat story in 2014. Their recent investigations reveal far more details about how these financial fraud operations worked, how did they come to light, where the money went and why some of the world’s largest banks failed to shut these schemes down.

Join us on 17th October (Tuesday) at our exclusive financial crime conversation with Paul Radu, Executive Director at OCCRP, to hear how his team of investigative journalists exposed the biggest money laundering scams in Eastern Europe. You will also hear about the impact of increased transparency around beneficial ownership and what steps banks may consider taking to prevent their services being used by corrupt parties and money launderers.

This is the first event in Thomson Reuters financial crime conversation series, bringing trending financial and risk topics such as exposing money laundering failures in global banking and discussing the role private and public institutions play in fighting financial crime.

We look forward to seeing you.
